Laboratory Technician or Technical Administrative Person within the laboratory for Angiogenesis and Vascular Heterogeneity

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position within the laboratory for Angiogenesis and Vascular Heterogeneity as per 1 June 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a permanent full-time position.

We offer a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The Department employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. Our infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. The group
The lab of Peter Carmeliet, the laboratory for Angiogenesis and Vascular Heterogeneity, recently started at the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University and is closely linked to his lab at the Flanders institute for biotechnology (VIB, Leuven, Belgium). There will be regular interaction, which offers opportunities for short term training periods in Leuven. Both the newly starting Aarhus and the Leuven lab, apply their expertise and therapeutic focus to evaluate and deliver novel therapeutic concepts into clinical development with the ambition to change the life of patients with vasculature-related disorders. Standard gene modulation strategies (conditional gene targeting/silencing/overexpression) are exploited as well as sophisticated novel disruptive high-throughput multi-omics approaches (bulk and scRNAseq, scG&T, scATAC; metabolomics, etc.) and computational modelling, both for hypothesis generating and hypothesis testing experiments. For instance, recent successful efforts in generating a single cell transcriptome atlas of ECs from various healthy and pathological (including tumor) tissues from preclinical models and clinical samples have revealed the existence of previously unknown endothelial cell subtypes, including endothelial cells with a resident endothelial stem cell signature, and endothelial cells with a putative immunosurveillance role, key findings being taken into further investigation. In addition, endothelial cell-specific Genome scale metabolic models (GEM) were generated and successfully used to predict metabolic enzymes/pathways essential for endothelial cell growth.

Your job responsibilities
As laboratory technician or technical administrative person, your primary tasks are focused on research and logistic support. You will contribute to the laboratory for Angiogenesis and Vascular Heterogeneity by: participating in research projects focussing on angiogenesis and vascular heterogeneity; through logistics and stock management of products, consumables and devices. You will support the team in discovering and validating novel target candidates. In your daily work, you will work under the supervision and in close collaboration with postdoctoral scientists and have a close interaction with other colleagues.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Performing cell culture techniques: isolation and culture of endothelial cells and other cell types.
  • Executing western blotting, PCR, quantitative PCR, glycolysis and fatty oxidation assay.
  • Histology: fixation, embedding, cutting (vibratome or cryostat) and (immuno)staining of human and murine tissue.
  • Imaging and analysis of tissue slides.
  • Viral transduction experiments.
  • Ordering of product, consumables and devices. Deliveries follow-up. Stock management.
Being familiar with the ordering system of Aarhus University is an advantage.
  • Mouse colony management. Performing animal experiments and assisting in animal experiments.
  • Communicating and reporting laboratory results in a professional manner and in digital format (e.g. excel)
  • Keep laboratory and equipment clean and organized to ensure safety in the laboratory.

You will report to Prof. P. Carmeliet.

Your competences
Selected candidates should be reliable and well organized. The work requires independence and demands flexibility and accuracy. Furthermore, the candidate should have good interpersonal skills and be interested in working within an international team (partially located in Leuven, Belgium).

The ideal candidate should fulfil the following qualifications:
  • A background within laboratory technologies, biotechnology, biomedicine, biology or biochemistry.
  • Solid experience as a laboratory technician in a research lab
  • Proven experience in molecular biology, cell culture or biochemistry work and techniques
  • Candidates are familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience in histology, imaging and animal surgery will be considered as an advantage.
  • Experience with the ordering system of the Aarhus University is a plus
  • Good English and Danish communication skills, both oral and written, are expected
  • You are a team player with a results and problem-solving oriented spirit
  • You are proactive, motivated and enthusiastic
